Best Preschool Computer Software Programs

By

Good computer programs for toddlers help engage their imagination while teaching them something about the world around them. There are many good games available online for free, such as pbskids.org and Big Fish Games, but if you're going to pay for software for your toddler, there are many fun, education and inexpensive options out there.

One of my favorite companies that makes good, reliable and engaging software for children is called School Zone. They have a few different programs available for preschool / kindergarten-aged children, the multi-pack software seems like a good bang for your buck, ranging from preschool through kindergarten so you will get more time out of your software. My daughter still enjoys playing with her Big Pencil software from this company and I will definitely buy more of their products in the future.

Software for Kids is an excellent resource for different educational software for toddlers up until middle school. They resell software so you can buy it straight through them or just use the site to browse multiple kinds of kids software at the same time, particularly useful if you have older children or if you're buying software as a gift for someone else's kids.

JumpStart.com is free to join, but can be upgraded to a full membership for $7.99 a month or $74.99 a year. While the price is a little steep, it is an immersive real-time online virtual world your little ones will benefit from on so many different levels. Jumpstart makes learning fun, you start by creating your avatar, an online physical representation of yourself. After you finish that you can wander around the world playing learning games and interacting with computer characters. For those of you who have played on There.com, JumpStart seems like a less expensive children's version.

The most important reason to allow your toddler to play age appropriate computer games is to help them become "school ready."  Here is a wonderful site to help you understand how to help your toddler become school ready, step-by-step.

Great hub. Thanks for the links. KidOz browser is really good. It opens up all the appropriate sites for your kids. It has games, videos, education stuff. Combines Nick, pbs, disney, etc. My two boys can play hotwheels or boy stuff, and my daughter can play little pony or girl stuff. It's very good. It does open up cartoon network and other sites but you can set levels, so youngest don't get on fighting games or things like that. Keep up the good work.

Here is the site. It's a quick download and free. http://kidoz.net/ Enjoy, I watch alot of the vids like jimmy neutron and scooby. Best part about having kids is you get to play games and watch cartoons! I'll never grow up. Have fun.

I should have my wife look at this. She is the pre-school professional.

Nice to see you back.

Take care, and Keep on Hubbing!

My 3 year old grandson loves Reader Rabbit PreSchool so much. It is great for little ones first learning to use the computer. It is sometimes hard for them to click the mouse. These softwares allow them to play some games just by moving the mouse over the targeted picture.

My daughter has a daycare here and I help out. We have a couple of Ipods for the children that are very educational, also some that require manipulative skills. They like them I have only had one catastrophe: one left in the sandbox. good hub

vrajavala: Oh, how cool is that! You guys are on the cutting edge of technology. It's amazing, when I look back at my childhood and stop to think, wow, how did we live and learn without being able to log on? Then I look at my daughter and wonder what things will be like when she's my age. What is she going to look back on, what kinds of issues will she have to face with her children, if she has any, and burgeoning technology. I Pod's, (getting back on topic here,) drive me nuts. Oh, sure, I thought as a child carrying around my Walkman that weighed like three pounds, how awesome it would be if we had one device that would store all our music on it... (really, the I Pod was MY idea, don't let Jobs fool you!,) but the manipulation required to make the thing actually work drives me NUTS. Even more so with my SO's 'pod, which has a rubber case around it. I dunno how your kids are getting them to work, but my hats off to you, your daughter and her daycare'ers. Thanks for taking the time out to read and comment, I really appreciate it!
